I arrived back at Heathrow from Killeen, Texas on Monday having competed in the World Bench Press Championship. It was a great experience. I trained in Clinton, Indiana, with others of the GB team for a week before heading off to Killeen, Texas. We trained there on a military base which is the largest military base in the USA - 800 square miles!. The gym was enormous. I had a bit of a scare a few days before the competition as I developed an ear infection so had to be put on antibiotics. I felt quite drained and weak right up to the day of the competition. However the competition went well. I achieved 8 white lights from the referees which meant all my 3 lifts were good. I placed 4th with a lift of 132.5kg in the 56kg weight class which is 2 classes heavier than my IPC category, with a bodyweight of 47.1kg.
On Friday I was interviewed by Ian Wyatt, from the BBC Essex radio Saturday Breakfast show. This went out on Saturday morning around 7.50am. At that time I had just arrived at Stoke Mandeville for the British Powerlifting Championships. I had been pretty well jet-lagged all week. I felt tired during the day and wide awake and hungary at about midnight. Not a good feeling! Anyway, my coach intended that I should lift no more than 125kg but as it turned out I did feel quite good after the first lift and I put in a 130kg 3rd lift, gaining 9 white lights overall. This was enough to retain my British Champion title and I also won the Harry Dufton trophy for the most improved lifter. My next competition is on the 19th June at Milton Keynes. This will be the British Un-assisted Bench Press Championship (able bodied). It's proving to be a very busy year so far!
